Squirrels are cute little animals, but they can be incredibly destructive, destroying electrical cabling, pipes, and wooden beams & causing thousands of pounds of damage in your home or business premises. A squirrel infestation can also be hazardous to your health if they gain access to your cold-water storage as they will defecate and urinate in it.

At Emris Services we employ many different methods for trapping or baiting squirrels and will assess which technique will be the most effective and humane.

Grey squirrels are approximately 18 inches in size, including their 9-inch tail, and they weigh about 1-1.5 lbs. They are usually a greyish colour however they can have tan hairs in the fur & a white belly.

Their winter coat is grey above with a white underside. Their summer coat is shorter, sleeker and more brownish grey.

Red squirrels have red/brown upper parts in summer but may show some grey on the back in winter, which can sometimes lead to some confusion.

Red squirrels are smaller, lighter and have ear tufts. Their natural habitats are wooded areas in tree cavities, and they can also be near hardwoods like oaks and hickory trees and will construct feeding shelters out of leaves.

Squirrels generally have two litters a year & 3-7 young per litter. They breed in midwinter and late spring. Gestation is about 44 days. Their diet consists of bird eggs, insects, berries, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and nestling birds. Squirrels also like to hoard their food.

Squirrel Information

Squirrels are most active before sunrise, especially in winter. Their peak activity is four-five hours before daybreak. They can inhabit attic areas as well as crawl spaces. They like to enter the attic areas from your gutters and nearby trees and bushes. Installing gutter guards or down spouts with screening may prevent them from climbing up to the roof through a downspout.

These are the seven signs easiest signs to spot when looking for evidence of squirrels in your home or loft.

  • Scratching and rustling sound from your loft or a wall cavity.
  • Spotting droppings in the attic.
  • The smell of urine in the loft area might indicate the infestation has been going-on for some time.
  • Spotting lots of other squirrels around your property, particularly near your roof or on high fences
  • Fruit and nuts stolen from bird feeders, or the feeders are being disturbed/knocked over.
  • Bark stripped from trees in your garden.
  • Holes in vents or damage to your insulation foam
